Work-Life Balance (WLB), a term that everybody in the organization gripes about. Right from the person at the top of the helm (Presidents, VPs, CEOs, etc.) to even the most junior associate in the organization, everyone starts complaining about the lack of WLB.
It starts with blaming their immediate leads or managers which ultimately ends with the Michael Scotts (The Office Series), the Bill Lumberghs (Office Space movie), the pointy-haired bosses (Dilbert) of the organization, and, sometimes, the customers too! They are just a part of the organization do their work and they may or may not be the reason for the lack of WLB.
Of course, there are definitely obnoxious people who always get on everyone's nerves. In some cases, people are helplessly caught because of many external reasons and factors that forces people to be workaholics, slogging and compromising a lot of their personal front for the sake of work.
With that said, Work-Life Balance is a state-of-mind. It is not something extraneous but can be influenced by extraneous factors. But, it is the person who should decide what his/her state-of-mind should be. Some like to work more, some less. Some like to spend more time with family, some only during certain days of the week etc. The balance has to be struck on what and how much to prioritize between different things in one's life. There's no point in expecting that someone else will provide a solution to your situation.
So, how does one maintain their WLB?
The following points might help.
- Understand that it is a state-of-mind
- 3000 Weekends - Read the post here
- Pray to God in storm, but keep on rowing.
All the three points, when clubbed together will give you the right judgement to your situations. There is no one right solution to it. When you understand the 3000-weekends philosophy, you will be able to adjust your state-of-mind by prioritizing what is important in your life. It would even give you the guidance to handle external factors like aggressive managers, obnoxious people who are hurdles etc. and plan your work effectively.
To explain the third point, the situations might not let you take some important decisions in life immediately, like taking up a different job, starting a business, moving to your hometown etc. To finally achieve what you want, don't stop taking those small steps towards the goal.
The understanding that WLB is not something extraneous but something within lets handle situations better!
