Conversations – 3000 Weekends

It was a typical Monday at office – everyone had that not-enough-rest, I-need-one-more-day look.  I, on the other hand, was having I-was-there, but-not-now look, which naturally was raising eyebrows.  I was tapping my keyboard like playing a piano.

Raj, my teammate, was curious about it.  Well, who wouldn’t if they find a Buddha on a Monday morning?  After a few minutes, none of my teammates could take it.  A Buddha on a Monday morning could mean only one thing – I was in my notice period.

They gathered around me, Raj broke the silence.  “Did you submit your resignation on Friday after we all left?”

“What?  No, I didn’t, but what made you think like that?”

“Well, you seem calm, composed and seem like you are enjoying the Monday.”

“So?”

“It’s not typical of you.”

“Gotcha!  So, is that why you are worried?  Well, you don’t have to.  In fact, I am better now than last week or the weeks before it because of something I read and realized over the weekend.  You want to know that?”

“Of course, who wouldn’t?”

“Okay, it’s called 3000 weekends. Tell me how many weekends we all have in a year.”

“52.”

“Okay, let’s assume that we all work until we are 60, then we have approximately 3000 weekends.”

“That’s right.”

“Now, boy, of that 3000, 1500 is already gone going by our team’s average age of 25, so we have only 1500 left.”

“Hmm…go on.”

“Of the balance 1500, reserve the last 500 for your family and for your health, for example, children’s marriage, your health check-ups, hospital visits, etc.  Those last 500 rarely belong to you, it goes to your family and doctor if you don’t plan well.”

“So, that means we have only 1000 weekends left?”

“Yes. Now, tell me, are you really looking forward for the next weekend?”

“No, now that we have only 1000 left.”

“So, what do you think we can do?”

“Make every day a weekend.”

“How?”

“Enjoy every day as if it is a weekend.  Make the most of it, be it with colleagues, family, customers, whoever it is.  Every moment becomes precious now.”

“Go on.”

“That way we have 3 weekends every week.”

“Yes, yes.”

“And so, sir, that way, the 1000 weekends now become 3000 weekends again.”

Don’t I work with a wonderful bunch of people?
